(31 August 2025, Hong Kong) The 2025 Asian Eastern Zonal Women’s Volleyball Championship (2025AEZ), organized by the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China, concluded today (31 August) at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Hong Kong. Team China faced a fierce battle against Team Chinese Taipei, ultimately defeating their opponent with a set score of 3-1 to successfully defend their title. Meanwhile, Team Hong Kong, China lost to Team Korea in the 3rd place match, finishing fourth on the home soil.
Team China demonstrated a commanding start to their title defense in the Asian Eastern Zonal Championship, sweeping their first three matches and never conceding a single set, while limiting opponents to no more than 16 points per set. Despite captain LI Chenxuan sustaining an injury in the semifinals, she continued as a starter for this pivotal match.
In the first set against Team Chinese Taipei, Team China built a 16-12 lead through disciplined blocking and forcing errors from their opponents. Team Chinese Taipei’s middle blocker YEH Yu-Wen rallied her team with two successful attacks, while outside hitter HSU Wan-Yun delivered a standout performance, scoring 9 points, including an “ace” serve that leveled the score at 19-19. The set remained close, and after YEH’s slide attack, Team Chinese Taipei led 24-23 for the first time since the beginning of the set. In a dramatic finish, LIU Shuang-Ling sealed the set for Team Chinese Taipei with a decisive attack, ending the set 26-24.
The intensity persisted in the second set, with Team Chinese Taipei’s resilient defense challenging Team China, keeping the score difference within two points throughout. Team China pulled ahead 24-21 late in the set, but repeated attacks were denied, allowing Team Chinese Taipei to tie at 24. Key plays from JI Yuxiao and ZHAO Zhexi secured two consecutive points for Team China, clinching the set 26-24 and equalizing the match.
Early in the third set, Team China fell behind 7-10 after a reception error from LI Chenxuan, but she redeemed herself by sharing the scoring responsibility with ZHAO Zhexi to gradually reclaim the lead, at one point stretching the advantage to 20-16. Team Chinese Taipei fought back with CHANG Yi-Chi and top scorer TSAI Yu-Chun, who netted a match-high 19 points, tying the set at 21-all. A crucial mistake from CHANG Yi-Chi allowed Team China to secure the set 25-22.
At the start of the fourth set, both teams engaged in fierce exchanges, with the score rising alternately. Team Chinese Taipei relied on the strong attacks of TSAI Yu-Chun and LIU Shuang-Ling, who together contributed 10 points. However, Team China effectively leveraged aggressive serving to energize their blocking system, securing 7 block points in the set and fully utilizing their net height advantage. Middle blocker LI Hanyu and opposite hitter JI Yuxiao were active on offense, repeatedly breaking through the opponent's defense and helping their team establish a lead. Additionally, Team Chinese Taipei committed as many as 10 errors in this set, allowing Team China to completely control the pace in the final stages and close the set at 25-19. Ultimately, Team China secured a 3-1 comeback victory over Team Chinese Taipei (24-26, 26-24, 25-22, 25-19), successfully defending their championship title in the Eastern Asian Zonal.
In today’s bronze medal match, Team Hong Kong, China, fueled by enthusiastic home crowd support, initially kept pace with Team Korea, maintaining a tight scoreline at 8-10. However, Team Korea soon exploited weaknesses in Team Hong Kong’s serve reception, disrupting their offensive rhythm and forcing a series of errors. With the score gap widening, Team Hong Kong, China ultimately fell 15-25 in the first set.
In the second set, Team Hong Kong, Chian fielded the same lineup and started evenly at 5-5, but soon found themselves on the back foot. The team made tactical adjustments by substituting in HAU Kai Wai and SUEN Yee Tung to bolster front-row blocking height and brought in TANG Sum Yuen to strengthen their attack. Key offensive contributions from CHIM Wing Lam and SHUM Lam, alongside multiple defensive saves from libero CHEUNG Hiu Nok, Michelle, helped narrow the deficit to just two points. However, Team Korea countered effectively, accelerating their fast attacks and targeting the setter position to disrupt Team Hong Kong, China’s flow, eventually taking the set 25-22.
In the third set, Team Hong Kong, China started with TANG Sum Yuen replacing captain YU Ying Chi in the starting lineup. Despite relentless defensive efforts by the team, they struggled to establish an effective counterattack system. Team Korea controlled the match tempo through stable attacks on both wings, with three players scoring over 10 points: LEE Yeonjae (12 points), CHOI Yuni (11 points), and PARK Hyeon-ju (11 points). After taking a 15-11 lead, Team Korea gradually extended their advantage. Despite reintroducing outside hitter CHIM Wing Lam to strengthen offense—who tied as the match’s top scorer with 12 points—Team Hong Kong, China was unable to break through and succumbed 14-25. Team Korea claimed the match 3-0, leaving Team Hong Kong with a respectable fourth place finish in the tournament.
