Team China to Face Team Chinese Taipei in Final Team Hong Kong, China Fell Short and Battle Team Korea for Third Place

(28 August 2025, Hong Kong) The 2025 Asian Eastern Zonal Women’s Volleyball Championship (2025AEZ), organized by the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China, concluded its final round of group stage matches today (28 August) at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Hong Kong, and all the semi-final matchups have been determined. Team Hong Kong, China fought hard for the top spot of Group A but fell to Team Chinese Taipei. As a result, Team Hong Kong, China will face Group B leader Team China in the semi-final.

Riding the momentum from their come-from-behind victory against Team Mongolia in their opening match and fueled by the support of home fans, Team Hong Kong, China went toe-to-toe with Team Chinese Taipei in the early stages of the match. SHUM Lam, who had an outstanding performance the previous day, once again took on the scoring burden and consistently found success in attack. However, Team Hong Kong, China began to lose ground midway through the set under pressure from Chinese Taipei’s high blocking and powerful serves, dropping the opener 17–25.

Well-prepared and tactically sharp, Team Chinese Taipei targeted outside hitters of Team Hong Kong, China, TANG Sum Yuen and CHIM Wing Lam, with their serves, effectively disrupting the first pass and making it difficult to build effective attacks. In the second set, Team Hong Kong, China fell behind early. Coach responded by introducing Suen Yee Tung alternated between setter and opposite to maintain a three-hitter front row, and the team briefly closed the gap to 15–18. However, they were unable to resist Team Chinese Taipei’s strong offensive push and conceded the set.

In the third set, Team Hong Kong, China capitalized on Team Chinese Taipei’s adjustment to start with setter HUNG Chia Yao, whose coordination with the squad lacked fluency, surging to an early 7–2 lead. But Chinese Taipei reacted quickly, bringing on captain and setter Liao Yi Jen alongside opposite hitter CHANG Yi Chi, swinging the momentum decisively back in their favor. With outside hitter TSAI Yu Chun scoring a match-high 17 points, Team Chinese Taipei completed the win by taking the third set 25–14. Team Hong Kong, China ultimately fell in straight sets (17–25, 18–25, 14–25). SHUM Lam, who scored team-high 9 points for Team Hong Kong, China, said, "Facing China in the upcoming match, stamina will be the biggest challenge. Our primary goal in this tournament is to advance to the semi-final, and having achieved that, we can now approach the remaining matches with a freer mindset."

In today's opening match, Team China launched a fierce offensive right from the start. However, their rhythm was disrupted when setter WU Jiahui was forced to leave the court due to an injury, allowing Team Macau, China to level the score at 8-8. The team quickly regained their composure, with ZHAO Zhexi scoring two consecutive aces to boost morale, and WANG Aoqian, middle blocker, repeatedly struck with quick attacks. Their height advantage also left Team Macau struggling to defend, enabling Team China to secure the first set. Team China continued to dominate the rhythm in the next two sets, recording a total of 15 aces throughout the match. Without facing significant challenges, they secured a shutout victory (25-12, 25-13, 25-7). WANG Aoqian was the top scorer of the match with 16 points, while LI Chenxuan and ZHAO Zhexi continued their excellent form, contributing 25 points combined.

Tomorrow (29 August) will be a rest day for the tournament. Competition will resume on Saturday (30 August) with the semifinals and classification matches. Team Hong Kong, China will face Team China, while Team Chinese Taipei will play against Team Korea. In the classification match, Team Mongolia will meet Team Macau, China in the battle for fifth place.
